Hidcote is one of the most popular English varieties (Lavandula Angustifolia) which does well in our cooler climate. Our farm is in a 5B growing zone and the winter winds can be brutal, but Hidcote is strong and survives cold winters. Like its other English cousins, it blooms in late June and early July. About Phenomenal |
This is a classic and popular type of lavender. A variant of what you see in the Provence region of France. They can grow to be very large, with long stems. It, and its French cousins are late bloomers, peaking from mid-July to mid-August. |
Hardiness |
Zones 5-9. We cover our Phenomenal in late November and remove the covers in early May depending on the weather. Both this and Grosso are much more sensitive to long periods of cold winds. |
Fragrance Notes |
High levels of camphor and highly fragrant. We would describe this as a “soapy” scent compared to English which is more sweet. |
Uses |
Great for any kind of aromatic uses. The very high oil yield (3 times the English lavender) from these plants makes it attractive for growers and distillers. |
